Yitzhak Shamir Passes at 96

I am stunned at the lack of any reporting on what happened today. I’ve just read in the Jerusalem Post that former Israeli PM Yitzhak Shamir, a man who fought for Israel long before the Jews had a homeland, has passed away. He was 96 years old.

PM Shamir fought both the Palestinians and the British after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. He fled anti-Semitism in Europe and settled in the Palestinian Mandate – not a nation, but a territory once controlled by the Ottomans who fell during WWI – and while fighting to control a tract of land that many hoped would become Israel again he was sent to a “detention camp.” He was released and then sent back to a camp on the African continent, released again only when Israel declared her independence in 1948. He later worked for Mossad, heading multiple major missions including those dedicated to tracking down former Nazi officers all over the globe.

In 1991, during the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein couldn’t directly strike America so he fired more than thirty SCUD missiles into Israel. PM Shamir led his people through that time and resisted the urge to bypass American forces to retaliate against Saddam. He left politics after a resounding defeat in 1992 by the leftist Labor party. It’s worth noting that it was the Labor party that ended up caving in to most of the Palestinian demands and under their watch that the Second Intifada took place, seeing the brutal murders of nearly one thousand Israeli civilians at the hands of Palestinian bombers and gunmen. The Second Intifada dwarfed the first, which ended after Shamir waged war on all fronts to stop the anti-Israeli violence.

Yitzhak Shamir, zikhrono livrakha (may his memory be blessed).

  1. I too was stunned by the utter lack of coverage. I met him briefly while in Israel back in the 80’s. He was a man that had a worldwide impact, to say the least.

  2. Kind of not surprising since mentioning an Israeli leader with courage willing to fight wouldn’t be politically correct. I believe the UN still has not admitted that the terrorist bombing directed against those Israelis is in fact a “terrorist act.” Maybe it was a simple mugging gone wrong? Just irritates me. And our local “Bargain Days” downtown celebration had a “Free Palestine” tent set up too.
