Did you know that there’s now an ongoing debate in the emergency medical community about c-spine? C-spine is the method we use to immobilize your spine after a car wreck or when you fall – it can be pretty uncomfortable no matter what we do. It involves putting a stabilization collar on and strapping you to a backboard. Recent research has shown that backboards may actually do more harm than good, so our new protocols (at least in most areas) is to try to determine whether c-spine is really necessary. In some cases, however, mechanism of injury still dictates whether we take that precaution.

Most of my readers have no idea what I’m talking about. It’s not because you’re uneducated, you’re just not trained to do what I do. The people who are far less likely to understand what I’m talking about? The fast food workers currently striking in 100 cities to demand that the federal minimum wage be raised to $15 an hour.

I don’t mean that as an insult. I’m making a point.

I went to college to learn emergency medical technology and emergency services management. To get my EMT certification I had to pass the classes before passing a gauntlet of skills stations. I had to prove my knowledge in c-spine, oropharyngeal/nasopharyngeal airways, bag-valve masks, CPR, trauma assessment, medical assessment (yes, there is a difference), mass casualties, and AED. Then I still had to take the 500-question national registry exam to get the card that said I had satisfied the basic requirements to become an EMT.

Every two years I have to take the skills stations and the written test all over again; in those two years there can be any number of changes in our protocols. In one system I’m allowed to use CCR rather than CPR (one uses rescue breathing while stopping compressions, the other doesn’t). In the other system I have to use CPR. If I work in a neighboring county (which I occasionally do), I have to be up-to-date on my phlebotomy skills. Where I normally work I can spike bags and set up blood tubing, but I’m not allowed to start IV’s.

There is always new research coming out. I have to constantly pay attention to new rules about what we can and cannot do in traffic. I am much more likely to get into a wreck in my ambulance than in my personal vehicle, no matter that I’m a highly-trained driver who religiously pays attention to everyone around me. I often work 24 or 48 hours at a stretch and frequently have to wake from a dead sleep to answer 911 calls for anything ranging from abdominal pain to a gunshot wound.

I absolutely love what I do. I hated working in an office setting. What I do is worth about $11 an hour. Some of my brothers and sisters make less. The pay will never stop me from working my butt off because I love it.

I fail to understand how flipping burgers is somehow worth more than all of the time, money, and hard work I’ve put into what I do.

I don’t do what I do for recognition. That’s not what I’m after here. I am hoping someone will explain to me why so many are so willing to raise hell about the wages of people who are uneducated and otherwise unskilled. Fast food is not a career. You don’t attend college to learn to work a fryer or clean a grill. That line of work was meant for high school students and college kids working their way through school, not parents supporting multiple kids.

The argument being made is that wages are tied to a person’s dignity. It is undignified to now work for $7.25 an hour – when I worked fast food in high school, I only made $4.25 an hour. I’m wondering now if I should sue for back wages for my dignity’s sake.

The other argument being made is that these corporations make more than enough to pay that kind of money. What these people don’t realize is that when the government raises minimum wage so drastically, it causes sudden and severe inflation. The dollar is devalued and everything costs more, but the standard of living doesn’t go up with it. The argument that a higher wage is needed to make life easier to afford is self-defeating; instead of closing the gap between so-called classes, it creates a genuine disparity. Redistribution of wealth always has that effect.

There are a number of issues to be considered, both big and small. Like most liberals, however, these folks don’t want to consider the big picture. All they know is what affects their tiny little world. If they get what they want they won’t be able to understand why the price of basic items has skyrocketed.

And when fast food workers can work a stand-up 24 where they get assaulted, thrown up on, and have to press padded trauma dressing into a sucking chest wound that’s spitting blood all over you, then I’ll hear complaints about not making enough money.

  1. Thank you so much for your service. First responders deserve much more than $11/hr. You may not be a saint, but in my mind you are pretty damn close!

  2. One can’t choose their genetic structure / it’s not
a choice one has / thus one need in making their
best of the situation. That your a mite smarter in
brain cells you can use to your advantage / YET
when coming unto arrogance as ignorance then
you excel in arrogance iggnorance unto others,
others whom not so fortunate in ability to learn
in lacking ability to learn ( though truth in many
cases it be a means of learning never available
thus talents that one having)(never discovered).
I’ll write a further comment soon / giving advice
as how best in gaining that of (true knowledge).

  3. My earlier comment was not with intent to cause offence
but rather in bringing to your attention that you become
a victim of illusion where by rights your destiny’s reality.

The solution for humanity as individual / in bringing true
peace is not a problem / the problems in accepting as in
putting the solution into practice. I tell you this as in one’s
understanding such is in itself a very valuable knowledge.

At the end of giving the solution to one’s need I’ll give a
few words in explanation / as to why the solution is hard
in it’s acceptance / thus one needs make greater effort
and not to be poor when one lives on top of a goldmine.

  4. I do not wish to veer off into explanations but to give a
simple clear message as to such means of true peace.

The final stage in human development is of meditation
via meditation one can turn the senses inward in one’s
doing having a very practical experience of creator as
being gifted with the clarity of understaning of creation.

Throughout the history of humanity there’s (always) a
Teacher of Teachers whom will aid guide those in their
reaching such the stage where meditation required in
furthering of one’s development in knowing / true self.

Present time the Teacher of Teachers is Prem Rawat
Prem has dedicated his life to aid / guide those whom
reaching such stage where meditation be required in
the bringing their greater experience / understanding.

On pc search put (words of peace) or (words of peace
global) on site selection of videos which Prem explains
meditation as gives a open invitation to guide all whom
having reached such stage / that meditation required
in their gain in knowing the true peace one ever seek.

  5. Why Can Accepting A Solution Of Peace Be Difficult ?.
I’ll not get caught into explanations but keep it simple.

The purpose of creation of universe but that it sustain
the human form / purpose of the human form as brain
is that of growth in understanding as experience….the
final stage of such understanding / experience / be via
meditation (the problem) we see the material illusion as
the ultimate of experience as understanding / where in
reality it the gateway to all understanding / experience).

Thus the problem is not the solution / but the accepting
solution and putting such into practice via meditation…
where mind is not the master / but the brain is activated
with the greater understanding as experience in setting
one free / understanding creation /one knowing creator.

  6. There’s a process to the working world:
    Entry-level position;
    Next level;
    Next level;
And so on. Adults who choose to make a career out of jobs that pay minimally (because they require minimal intelligence and skills) are crazy if they think I’m going to fork over $12 for a Big Mac, which is what’ll happen.
Welcome to Obama’s America, where fast-food employment = success.

  7. Raising minimum wage does not work. Just Raising MW alone, I mean.
Some people think that if people are struggling to pay bills, then just raise the minimum wage, + people’s paychecks will be bigger, and that will solve everything.
    Not enough.

Raise the MW paychecks on everyone in one USA state, [say from $7 an hour to $9 an hr], or raise them in the entire USA, then that will increase the operating costs of store owners + business owners. It will also raise the prices of all products, and some other things, in the USA.

So…to make up for the money that the store owners + U.S. bosses have to pay for these new minimum wage paychecks, the bosses will just pass on the big new costs to the people who BUY products in the USA, meaning everyone in the USA, including those people with the [new $9 an hour minimum wage paychecks].

Pushing up the minimum wage only increases people’s fortunes for a little while. Then the bosses + the product makers will shift up the prices of their products to combat the new costs of minimum wage.

If you do the false solution of raising the minimum wage to $9 an hr or more, the economy will soon eat up that new minimum wage, and in 2 years or more, we will hear people saying:

$9 an hour is not enough, we NOW HAVE to raise the minimum wage to $11 an hour. And later it will be $13 is all that we need, and later it will be $15 is all that we need…

Please don’t support the people in government + politicians that say that just increasing the minimum wage will solve all your problems. It won’t.
If the only thing that they do is raise the minimum wage, you’ll find yourself with not enough money, very soon.

  8. And here we go again.
On April 2, 2014, the White House + some Democrats in congress are still trying to fly this Lead balloon of an idea.
Raising minimum wage without [stopping bosses + product makers] from raising their prices is a plan that is dead even before you start. Please don’t support this MW idea.
